Walk Vancouver's Low Tides
WALK VANCOUVER'S LOW TIDES LIKE A LOCAL
EXPERIENCE VANCOUVER'S TIDAL FLATS
Stretching out almost a kilometre at low tide along Vancouver's coastline, we'll explore the expansive tidal flats, wade through tide pools, walk out to a hidden sandbar, and watch for herons, eagles, seals, and if we're lucky, a whale.
As a local who knows these tides well, I'll guide you over the flats so you can slow down and focus on what's around you, feel the tide moving beneath you, hear waves rolling in and spot the eagles flying overhead, as part of a restorative way to experience Vancouver.

Come walk Vancouver's low tides with me.
We'll cross the tidal flats and take in sweeping views of English Bay, the North Shore, and the Strait of Georgia, as part of a sensory experience that invites you to slow down and feel a deeper connection to nature.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Few urban beaches in the world offer an experience like this, with sweeping views of English Bay and the downtown skyline, Burrard Inlet stretching toward the North Shore mountains, and on clear days, the Gulf Islands across the Strait of Georgia.
It's an invitation to slow down and notice what's around you, to feel the ripples in the tidal flat sand, to notice the tide shift around you, and to hear the waves rolling over the shore.
Each low tide walk is unique and is shaped by the day's tide, the season, and the wildlife we encounter.
As your guide, I know these tides well, and every walk is carefully planned around Vancouver's predicted low tide times and levels, so we can safely explore the tidal flats at their best and reach the farthest points stretching into the Strait of Georgia.
We'll move at a gentle pace so you can slow down, focus on your sensory awareness, and have plenty of time to take in the stunning panoramic views. I'll guide you through shallow tide pools and out to where the low tide reveals an exceptionally soft sandbar, and I'll help you spot local marine life, including herons, cormorants, and harbour seals, and on occasion, grey whales feeding close by.
Availability of this tour is based on Vancouver's predicted low tide times and levels.

WHAT TO WEAR & BRING
Wear shoes or sandals that are easy to slip off and carry once we're out on the flats, or that you don't mind getting wet and sandy. Shorts or skirts are also a good idea, since we'll be wading through shallow water.
Once we're out on the flats, many guests choose to go barefoot, feeling the cool sand and the shifting tide as we wade through the tide pools.
WHAT TO WEAR AND BRING:
- Shoes or sandals you can easily remove and carry
- Shorts, skirt, or clothes that you can easily wade into shallow water with and don't mind getting wet
- Layered clothing (dress for the weather), winds blowing across the tidal flats often make it feel cooler than elsewhere in Vancouver
- Sun protection (sunscreen, hat, sunglasses in the summer)
- A water bottle on warm days (there are water refill stations nearby)
- A water resistant jacket on rainy days
WHERE WE MEET
We meet at Locarno Beach Picnic Site, tucked under a circle of towering trees just before the concession stand (coming from English Bay), and just steps from the bus stop at Northwest Marine Drive and Belmont Avenue.

Look for a circle of blankets laid out on the grass between the trees, that's us.

This meeting point provides convenient access to washrooms, transit, bike share stations, and parking. We start each walk gathered under the tree canopy, which provides plenty of shade on warm days and creates a peaceful environment to gather before heading out onto the tidal flats.
Please arrive a few minutes early.
GETTING HERE
Locarno Beach sits about 7 km west of Downtown Vancouver, just past the bend where False Creek meets English Bay, along the same scenic waterfront route that continues on to Kitsilano, Jericho Beach, and Spanish Banks. It's an easy trip by bike, bus, or car, and pairs well with cycling the seawall or a stop at Granville Island on the way.
Getting here:
- Bike: About 30 minutes from Downtown Vancouver via the seawall, or 20 minutes from Granville Island. Take the Burrard Bridge, or the Aquabus for a shortcut across English Bay. → Mobi Bike Share stations are available along the route, with drop-off points at Jericho Beach and Spanish Banks.
- Bus: About 30 minutes from Downtown Vancouver or Granville Island
- Car or rideshare: About 20 minutes from Downtown Vancouver, or 15 minutes from Granville Island. Ask your driver to drop you at the concession stand, then walk back a short distance to the shaded picnic area
